These finish to about 6” square. They wet and dry incredibly fast because of the properties of microfiber. Washcloths are a great “learning-to-knit” project. They also use up left-over bits of yarn from your larger projects or serve as introductions to new yarns. When I first heard of knitting washcloths I thought it was the silliest way to spend time I could imagine. Sadly, I was not properly brought up. My wonderful stepmother straightened me out, showed me her drawer full of hand knitted cloths, and convinced me of how very efficiently they wash. They make nice personal face cloths. With a bar of luxury soap thrown in, this cloth could be the beginning of a nice gift. The edges of this design will roll a good bit until they have been washed and dried flat once. Then they’ll calm down. On a mid-gauge machine use about stitch size 8. On a bulky use 5 or 6. On a Bond use key plate 2. (Or use what knits well on your machine) IF YOU USE THESE TO WASH DISHES, KEEP THEM WELL AWAY FROM THE STOVE. THESE ARE ACRYLIC YARNS and WILL MELT!
3-row tuck pattern (more pronounced texture): Use the latch tool to chain stitch cast on over 31 needles. (Bond knitters hang hem and weights now) Knit 2 rows plain and hang comb and weights. Select every 4th needle to tuck starting with needle 4. Knit 2 rows. Knit 1 row stockinet with all needles knitting. Select every 4th needle to tuck beginning with needle 2. Knit 2 rows in tuck, then 1 in stockinet. Continue in this manner until 54 rows of tuck pattern have been knitted. Knitters with completely manual machines will tuck by moving tuck needles to E position (all the way out) and manually returning them to upper working position for the stockinet rows. Those whose carriages have levers, be sure to change the lever ON THE SIDE TOWARDS THE KNITTED PIECE to the knit position when you want to resume stockinet. Knit 2 rows stockinet and chain stitch bind off.
2-row tuck pattern (more subtle texture): This goes a bit faster than the 3-row pattern if your machine has levers on the side that change E-position needles from tucking to knitting because you can leave one lever set to tuck and one lever set to knit. Begin in the same way as for the 3-row tuck cloth. After knitting 2 rows stockinet and hanging weights, set the carriage so that the lever now towards the work is in the tuck position and the one away is in the knit position. (Knitters with manual machines will still move needles from tuck to knit by hand). Select every 4th needle to tuck beginning with needle 4. Knit 1 row tucking and 1 row in stockinet. Select every 4th needle beginning with needle 2 and repeat. Knit 54 rows of tuck pattern, then 2 rows stockinet and bind off in chain stitch.
To increase the size of the cloth ˝”, cast on 35 stitches. Knit 60 rows of tuck. To increase further, add 4 stitches and 6 rows for every ˝ inch you wish to enlarge.
