| MAKING A DEEPER HEEL CUP USING THE STANDARD GAUGE AND PASSAP FABULOUS FELTED FOOTWEAR PATTERN To make a deeper heel cup on the standard gauge and Passap pattern, change the heel short-rowing sequence. Instead of placing 4 needles in hold at once, place 2 in hold. Do this 8-10 times (4-5 on each side of the bed) instead of the 4 times (twice each side of the bed) called for in the instructions. Reverse the proceedure and complete the heel by placing 2 needles at a time opposite the carriage back in work. The result will be a deeper heel cup. 8 times will produce a cup about twice as pronounced as the original version shown in the pattern. 10 times will be even more so. For most people, 10 times is all the short-rowing that can be done and still allow the foot to slide into the shoe with ease. You may also knit a few more rows at the cuff end than the 50 called for. 16-20 more rows knitted before the fold mark and 16-20 after will add enough for most people. Remember that the row counter is counting both beds so we are actually adding 8-10 rows to the knitting on each bed. Again, the limitation is that the foot opening must remain loose enough. If rows are added, fold the front edge of the shoe top 3" towards the toe instead of the 2.5 called for. This is to keep the shoe from rising uncomfortably high on the instep. Be especially careful to keep the stitching around the edge loose if the cuff and heel cup have been increased. |
